Jacob Dunlap
I have always been fascinated by the theory by which systems operate.
In 2023, I graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in Film and Media Studies. On the surface, this formal education has zero connection to the training of athletes and the development of athletic performance. But what it offered me was the opportunity to acknowledge and hone my proclivity for understanding why architectures, both material and immaterial, appear the way they do. It forced me to make a habit of understanding (1) why creative decisions are made and (2) the intent that acting on these decisions is meant to serve.
Despite competing in a variety of team and individual sports during my youth and adolescence, the sport that has defined my adult life is CrossFit.
I began training in the sport of CrossFit when I was 14 years old. It didn’t take long for me to begin collaborating with others—mentors, coaches, friends—to devise training plans that would optimize my performance. Per my desire to understand the system by which progression in this sport can be achieved, I spent the next ten years (as of my writing of this biography) collaboratively and independently learning how to achieve progress in the modalities of weightlifting, gymnastics, and endurance. I’ve applied these insights to my own training, and they have helped to situate my performance well within the top 1% of the world’s competitors.
I am now beyond excited to apply and teach my insights and practices to others.
In class settings, I strive to teach others how to understand the mechanics of movement, the strategy of sport, and how to relate their present fitness and capabilities to their goals within their chosen athletic endeavor.
In individual settings, I strive to tailor every component of an athlete’s training—both inside and outside of the gym—to their needs and aspirations.
As I’ve spent much of my life obsessed with understanding the theory by which systems operate, it is now my mission to funnel this obsession into optimizing individual performance as it relates to the athlete's sport and posture within life.
